Unreal conditions.
For unreal conditions, use a past tense in the main clause to talk about present or future situations, and would in the if clause.
If I had a million pounds, I’d buy a new house.
For obviously impossible situations, we use if…were instead of if…was:
If I were you, I’d study harder.
We can also use could/might and should instead of would in the if clause:
If I trained harder, I could run a marathon.
If we had more time, we might be able to work it out.
