In inglese ci sono tre modi diversi per esprimere il tempo passato: il simple past, il present perfect e il past perfect. Per ora vediamo come si forma e utilizza il simple past, che corrisponde al passato remoto italiano ma si usa spesso anche per tradurre il passato prossimo. Innanzitutto, esaminiamo il verbo to be, che costruisce il passato in modo diverso da tutti gli altri. Come per il presente, anche per quanto riguarda il passato la forma negativa si costruisce aggiungendo not al verbo ‘essere’. Nelle frasi interrogative la posizione di soggetto e verbo è invertita.
