In inglese, se si parla di un’azione iniziata nel passato e che perdura nel presente, si usa il passato prossimo (present perfect). In italiano, invece, si ricorre al presente.

Esempi: I haven’t talked to her since last Christmas. Non le parlo da Natale.

We haven’t seen each other for five years. Non ci vediamo da cinque anni.

Il present perfect è di uso comune anche dopo l’espressione how long?, per quanto tempo?

Esempi: How long have you had that car? I’ve had it for three months.

Da quanto tempo hai quell’auto? Ce l’ho da tre mesi.

How long have you worked in this office? I’ve worked here since August.

Da quanto tempo lavori in questo ufficio? Lavoro qui da agosto.
